I'm not the maiden in a gingko temple

Or a holy saint hid in ancient yew

About the Artist

Lisa Jennings is a painter, mosaicist and a mixed media artist living and working in South London. She graduated in Fine Art from Coventry University in the 90's and has continued to create art alongside teaching, event management and private tutoring as well as bringing up her family. Lisa currently works at The Brit School teaching and supporting students with additional educational needs in the Interactive Digital Design strand.

About the Bonsai

This indoor bonsai belongs to the artist and is a Fig tree (not the edible Fig type).

Figs or Ficus make good indoor bonsai's as they are tropical plants from south east Asia and can manage high temperatures and relatively low light levels. Ficus trees produce a milky looking latex sap when cut.

Soaked in cheap wine,

Evading thief sleep

We waited for the sun

We lounged

And talked. Or not.

And while we were not looking,

a metallic dawn

caught our new day in its iron fist.

Of course in the end, time insisted upon itself.

We knew it would.

But you.

You twisted into not-life

You fixed on something

You stopped,

unspeakable.

Me now in a black green swooshing garden of leaf and life and sound

I think about the iron twist.

What if?

If we had seen crimson cloud bellies.

If early light had filtered through leaves and leaves.

If we had heard the songbirds singing each to each.

About the Bonsai

This Yew bonsai has been allowed to grow unchecked for a few years to develop the branches and trunk. It will be stylied next year. Yews make great bonsais as they are shade tolerant, so can be placed in shadowy areas of the garden and they respond well to pruning. As evergreen trees they provide colour during the winter months.

The Yew tree is variably poisonous except for the flesh of the red berries (much loved by waxwings) and is often associated with churchyards. The tree can live for centuries although accuratley dating old trees is impossible because they become hollow with age which prevents counting the rings in the trunk. Some rare Yews are thought to be over a thousand yeras old.

Rats and rotgrubs,
Midges and marmadukes,
Skate pond skaters,
Wake up for the greatest day of all
Cottontail jack rabbits
Open eyes wide
Rise up now!
Let’s dance together at the feast of the ball

About the Writer

Ed Arantus first published his work in the Censored Zine (July 2010) and has exhibited his work ever since at venues like the Contemporary Arts Research Unit in Oxford (2014). About the Bonsai

This is an 'indoor bonsai' with the beautiful name, 'Tree of a Thousand Stars' due to its plentiful, tiny white flowers. It can be quite hard to keep as it doesn't like to be too hot, cold dry or wet and requires a humid atmosphere. I have had this tree for several months and it seems to be doing okay in my kitchen so far!

About the Artist

Melanie Honebone is a Wales-based fine artist and social care worker. She often works with mixed media and photography. Recent works have evolved her practice to include three dimensional mixed media art forms based on dolls, machines, and the human form. During lockdown this has evolved into examining the natural world in more detail due to the back garden being THE place to be seen in 2020     https://melaniehonebone.wordpress.com

About the Bonsai

The Chinese Elms in this paired planting are traditional bonsai subjects although the choice of a planting of two is unusual (odd numbers are preferred as they provide a more visually dynamic composition). I went ahead with the composition because the two trees together strongly represented my experience of British woods with paths through the trees which reach over and form a single canopy. The path through the trees is like a fairy tale.

Stalking in town parks inlaid with trees

or tiptoeing down weedy alleys

and visiting tatty market streets

I am the Gatherer

of peeling veneer from grandma's house

and warped ply from dad's shed

cobbled together marquetry, chipped board

and tea-ringed table tops

discarded lives of a thousand trees

About the Artist

Srinivas Surti was born in Hyderabad, India in 1970 and settled in the UK in 1978. He completed an MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins in 2002, where he was a recipient of the Rootstein Hopkins Postgraduate Award in 2001. He is currently a practice-based Phd student at Chelsea College of Art; his research focuses on surface relief as a form of rupture between the mediated image and the physical object to frame ideas of alterity through the use of the insignia. He has also been involved in teaching part-time since 2005, previously as Lecturer on the BA and MA Fine Art courses at UCA Farnham and currently on the BA Fine Art and Graphic Design courses at University of Suffolk. His studio is at Old Jet a multidisciplinary arts centre located at the former RAF / US Airforce base in Rendlesham, Suffolk.
